Oh, and a question. Are show cats easier to work with than pet cats? Are they more used to the hustle and bustle of strange places and don't freak out like pet cats?

In general, show cats are much easier to shoot than pet cats. Show cats are accustomed to busy and loud showhalls and are used to being handled by 4-6 judges in a day. Pet cats who never get out of the house are usually not cooperative models. Also, pet cats don't like baths...most of my clients have had a good bath and grooming within 24 hours of the shoot.

Preston,
OK, you've redeemed yourself. These are magnificent! Great cat, too.

My sister has a Maine Coon and she's just gorgeous but very skittish. I've tried to shoot her (photographically) and she's very difficult. I think your comments about show cats are similar to show dogs -- they know how to pose and don't mind being handled.

Still, I'm not going to seek out any cat clients. I think they are just too difficult -- for me at least.

Jim

Amazing. Makes me want to try my hand at cats :O

Do you pose the subjects completely or try to "catch" them in just the right positions?

I'm thinking about the tail placement in #2.

On the walking shot, do you start them out of frame and get them as they come in front of camera position?

Thanks, Jim. Even with show animals, this is the hardest work I've ever done...and I grew up working in a cotton mill in the Deep South.

Everything is posed. The owner is always there with a brush or comb for grooming touch up and to adjust the tail if the cat swishes it the wrong way, and if I'm lucky another person is there to help 'wrangle' the cats. Most poses are achieved with a combination of a playful kitty, a tease or two and audible cues....and a LOT of patience.

The walking shot is the most difficult to get. I start them on one side of the shooting deck tease them into a strut then do whatever it takes to get them to look at the camera.

Hey Preston,

These are great - as usual. Let me ask you a question...where are you doing most of your sessions? Are you mostly doing your work in Kansas, or are you traveling about?

As to the actual photography, your backgrounds around the cats seem lighter than the rest of the drop. Are you shooting these with a backlight, or are you doing it in PS?

James

Yes, I use a backlight.

These photos were taken in Brooklyn Park, MN (part of the Twin Cities). I travel all over to find nice subjects to photograph.
